Welcome to Kids, Lakes, Loons & Pines!
I'm Megan. I am a mama of four, kindergarten teacher, writer, soap-maker, and chicken-tender living in the Northwoods of Minnesota. I am fueled by strong cups of coffee and the passion and desire to teach and learn.
My hope is that you find some inspiration in this space from my experiences or from what I share to enrich your family life. Thanks for stopping by!

I just returned from an island camping trip with my four kids (plus one). I took the boat and the kids and ventured off into familiar territory in Voyager's National Park. We had Burnt Island to ourselves for a full 24 hours. We swam, fished, picked berries and explored. A perfect trip.
Yesterday afternoon I took a peek into my beehive, to check on progress. I found evidence of eggs, larva and many healthy worker bees. There is nectar and some honey stores. I did put on a honey super, but so far they have not made any honey to share with me, which is pretty typical of a first year hive, especially in northern climates. I was pleasantly surprised with a picking of wild raspberries that were abundant on the sod-rooftop where we keep the hive.
I continue to enjoy learning about bees and local flowers and wildlife with the experience of beekeeping. I hope you enjoy following along!
Here are just a few snapshots from a lovely weekend exploring Voyageur's National Park. With base camp at Nana & Papa's island home on Crane Lake we spent time this weekend exploring familiar places in Voyageur National Park with our children. We went home with walleye, blueberries and sun tinted skin.
Summer is being shy in my neck of the woods. We have had a long stretch of rain and dreary days, but I am trying to focus on the positives. Today I took a slippery hike up the ridge behind my house to pick some berries, then wandered around my garden checking out the progress. I found some berries as well as green tomatoes, herbs that were ready to be harvested and dried, and promises of raspberries, beets and carrots. In my wanderings I also found happy chickens and a tribe of small boys.
